tire wear, axle alignment

I have about 10,000 miles on my 2012 345RLS, and my right rear tire has over twice the wear as the others. Just discovered this while having the tire repaired during a 2500 mile trip; the tires were all fine when we left, so it appears it happened suddenly. Could an axle be out of alignment or is it more likely a defective tire, one with a shifted belt or some other anomaly. I would appreciate any comments or thoughts.
